Steven Carter, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist who enjoys providing the highest level of compassionate care for his patients. He treats a wide variety of ocular diseases both medically and surgically, including laser-assisted cataract and refractive surgery. He ensures his patients feel cared for, and he takes pride in providing outstanding surgical results. Dr. Carter has been involved as a volunteer with Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE), International since 2010, an organization that supports physicians who provide sight-restoring cataract surgeries to underserved communities throughout the world. He also volunteers his time regularly with the Westminster Free Clinic in Oxnard, CA, where he provides eye care to uninsured individuals in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, as well as the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has presented at numerous national conferences and has published several peer-reviewed articles in ophthalmic journals. Additionally, he is proficient in medical Spanish.
Dr. Carter completed his ophthalmology training at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine, where he served as chief resident. He was the first resident at UC Irvine to be awarded the emergency room consultant of the month, which was given for excellent communication and teamwork with the emergency department. He obtained his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine, and his undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego, where he graduated magna cum laude with honors. He received a B.A. in music with an emphasis on jazz as well as a B.S. in mathematics and economics.
As a lifelong resident of Southern California, Dr. Carter enjoys surfing, hiking, camping, wakeboarding, and most other outdoor activities. He also loves music and continues to play the saxophone outside of work as an ophthalmologist.
